GAME PLAY
How do I play?
The idea of Last Letter First is simple: a player enters a word, the next player’s word must begin with the letter that ended the prior players word.
Each word must be spelled correctly and must have not been already played by another player – if a word is misspelled or the word has already been played by another player, then that player gets a strike.
Three strikes, and the player is out of the game.
The winner is the last player who has less than three strikes.
For example,
1. Ella says the word “Unicorn”
2. James has to come up with a word that starts with “N”: “Narwhal”
3. Luke has to come up with a word that starts with “L”: “Lunar”
4. Ella then has to come up with a word starts with “R”:
… and the game repeats until a player gets a strike.
What happens if a player doesn’t make a move in time?
In timed games, if a player exceeds the turn limit, their turn is skipped and they may receive a strike depending on game settings. The game continues with the next player.
How does the strike system work?
Players receive strikes for invalid words, wrong starting letters, or repeated words. After accumulating strikes (usually 3), the player is eliminated from the game. Strikes help maintain fair play.
Can I view word definitions during gameplay?
Yes, tap or click on any word in the game to see its definition, pronunciation, and other details. This feature helps you learn new words while playing.
How are points calculated?
Points are calculated as: Points = word length × multiplier (gem words get a 2x multiplier). Longer words and gem words earn more points to reward vocabulary and strategy.
When does a game end?
The game ends when there is only one player left who has not yet received 3 strikes.
The last player with less than 3 strikes is the game winner
A player earns a strike when they
* Misspell a word
* Repeat a word that has already been used in the game
Can I play with word that does not exist?
No, only valid dictionary words are accepted. However, in some game modes, proper nouns may be allowed if specified in the game settings. Invalid words result in a strike.
What happens if I enter a word that does not exist?
If you enter a word that does not exist,
* You get a a strike
* The game moves to the next player who plays the same first letter
Three strikes and you are out of the game.
The last player with less than three strikes wins the game.
Can I use proper nouns in game play?
No, proper nouns (aka, the specific official name given to one unique entity of a person, place, or thing) are not allowed.
Can Fin AI play against more than 1 player?
No, Fin AI can only play against one player.
Can a player repeat a word?
In most cases, NO, repeated words are not allowed.
Every word must be unique to keep the game fair and challenging.
If you are playing a game where “Score the Game” is disabled in the Configure Your Game options, then repeated words are allowed.
