What’s with weavers weaving and wayfarers waving and well-wishers whistling? Well?
Okay, if you haven’t guessed what we’re up to here, we’re putting the spotlight on the letter “W” — the 23rd letter of the alphabet that you can’t spell the word “winner” without.
Fans of Last Letter First will be happy to know that there are quite a few W-words that can propel your score upward and make your competitors say, “Woah!”
Here are the ten highest-scoring W-words you can add to your vocabulary and use to your advantage while playing Last Letter First.
10. Waxy
“Waxy” is an adjective used to describe something made of, covered by, or resemblant of wax. Should you ever pay a visit to the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum, you’ll be surrounded by waxy global icons such as Michael Jackson, Princess Diana, Taylor Swift, and more. It doesn’t get waxier than that, but an apple near you may have a waxy appearance because, believe it or not, fruits like apples, plums, and pears secrete their own protective coating as they grow. “Waxy” will earn you a classy 17 points.
9. Wrecking
If you’d like to add an easy 20 points to your score, use the word “wrecking.” This action verb indicates that something is being ruined or damaged. A wrecking ball, for instance, can level a building with some whacks, which brings us to our next word on this top ten list!
8. Whacked
Picking up where we left off, “whacked” means “struck with a smart or resounding blow.” When a building is whacked by a wrecking ball, that building will crumble. This word can also be used informally to emphasize that something is bizarre or crazy. In our humble opinion, there’s nothing “whacked” about collecting 20 points with this word; it’s a power move through and through.
7. Wheezing
“Wheezing” is another 20-point scorer. This word describes what it sounds like when someone is having trouble breathing. Wheezing isn’t a good sign health-wise, but it has the opposite effect during Last Letter First: use it during gameplay, and you’ll breathe a sigh of relief at having just boosted your score.
6. Wheezes
“Wheezes” refers to multiple instances of “wheezing.” It will afford you 21 points. Fingers crossed that your opponent doesn’t respond with a word that rhymes with “wheezes.” Why? Because “squeezes” is worth 26!
5. Waxwing
According to the website All About Birds, the cedar waxwing is a type of bird identified by its “silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers.” These fruit-loving birds have high-pitched call notes. We’d like to think that your “call note” might be high-pitched, too, when you use this word to collect 21 points and fly closer to the top of the scoreboard.
4. Wizardly
“What a wizardly scar you have!” the clever wolf might say to Harry Potter if there were such a story about Harry Potter wandering into the woods, Little Red Riding Hood-style. A word that means “having characteristics of a wizard,” the powerful word “wizardly” will earn you 24 points. Just like magic!
3. Whizzing
Let’s define “whizzing” by using it in a Last Letter First-themed sentence: “My opponent’s whizzing past me on the global leaderboard!” The person saying this is emphasizing that you’re moving impressively fast. “Whizzing” will add 26 points to your score and make you look like a character straight out of Mario Kart, throwing green shells and bananas toward all those behind you.
2. Wheezily
This word carries the same definition as “wheezing” and “wheezes” and serves as the adverb of the three. Keeping with our aforementioned nod to the iconic Mario, playing this 26-point word will make you comparable to the formidable Bowser. Why? Because when you play “wheezily,” your opponents will need to come up with a “Y” word and try to outscore you, which could be tricky.
1. Whizbang
Say this word aloud. It’s fun, right? “Whizbang!” It sounds like a word a three-year-old would make up while wielding a squirt gun in the backyard on a hot summer day. If you’d appreciate adding 27 points to your Last Letter First score, “whizbang” your way toward victory. Fittingly, the definition of this word is “a resounding success.” That’s exactly what you’ll be if you continue to use high-scoring words like this one while playing Last Letter First!
